US makes corporate transparency commitment with 20 nations

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will announce America’s commitment to enhancing corporate transparency along with more than 20 other countries at the Summit for Democracy on Tuesday.While the Biden administration is already pursuing regulations to establish a new database on small business ownership, the commitment to be announced Tuesday morning promises to maintain that database, known as the beneficial ownership registry, and ensure that law enforcement will have access to the registry, and that individuals’ personal data will be protected, among other things.The registry will contain personal information on the owners of at least 32 million U.S. businesses as part of an effort to combat corruption.Colombia, Malta and Japan are some of the countries included in the commitment. “Unmasking shell corporations is the single most significant thing we can do to make our financial system inhospitable to corrupt actors,” Yellen said in prepared remarks to be deliv...

Armed suspect arrested after barricade situation lasting more than 8 hours

BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) — A shelter-in-place was issued for a barricaded armed person who was inside a north Boulder home for several hours. According to the Boulder Police Department, officers were called to an armed person who barricaded themself inside a home near 17th Street and Yarmouth Avenue in the North Broadway-Holiday neighborhood. BPD originally tweeted about the incident at 12:05 a.m. Officers said the individual broke into the home and no one else was inside at the time. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Migrants fearing deportation set mattresses ablaze at an immigration detention center in northern Mexico, starting a fire that left 39 dead, the president said Tuesday following one of the the deadliest incidents ever at an immigration lockup in the country.Hours after the fire broke out late Monday, rows of bodies were laid out under shimmery silver sheets outside the facility in Ciudad Juarez, which is across from El Paso, Texas, and a major crossing point for migrants. Ambulances, firefighters and vans from the morgue swarmed the scene.Thirty-nine people died and 29 were injured and are in “delicate-serious” condition, according to the National Immigration Institute. (AP) — A rescued juvenile dolphin that was airlifted from Texas to the Florida Keys about one year ago is thriving and interacting with other dolphins at a Keys-based marine mammal facility, officials said Monday.The orphaned male calf dubbed Ranger was discovered in June 2021. An overturned tractor-trailer on the intersection of the southbound lanes of US-27 and Interstate 75 has caused major traffic disruptions in the area. The incident occurred Tuesday morning when the vehicle, which appeared to be heading eastbound to go south on US-27, lost control and overturned due to a load shift.Weston Fire Rescue responded to the scene and treated two people in the cab of the semi-truck.
